A Fitting Tribute to Pappy on Memorial Day Weekend (2009)

by Dexter Balyeat

Many of us take our choice of whether or not to wear a helmet for granted.  Many young riders aren't old enough to remember the days when helmets were mandatory. After all it was almost 25 years ago when Donald Pittsley, aka Pappy, of Montville, CT won his battle to have the helmet laws repealed in Connecticut.  Sadly, Donald would pass from a heart attack before the realization of all his hard work.

While many accolades have been posthumously placed on Pappy, the best one seems to be the Annual Pappy's run.  Leaving from Baltic, CT and riding to Montville's Comstock Cemetery where Pappy's final resting place is located, Thousands of motorcyclists come out on Memorial Day Weekend to pay their respects.  This year the 34th Annual Memorial Run was no exception and I had both the honor and the privilege to attend and photograph the event.  I along with over 1500 riders paid tribute and we were rewarded to a great run, improving weather, a great after party with outstanding food and music. More important was the camaraderie we all shared.  I'm sure Pappy was smiling down on all of us.  Catch the photos here and on www.HaymondLaw.com
